As part of their topic on 'Food' the Year 7 boys and girls visited the 'Milestone' Store in Rathfriland. What a treat!!!
Led by Mark, their head chef, the boys and girls had a complete tour, behind the scenes, of the food production factory. The children saw at first hand how all the food displayed at the deli counter is made and processed. They saw all the fresh ingredients being placed in the various machines and how all the food is cooked. They also went right inside the massive freezers.
One amazing aspect was actually the cardboard box baler, which bales all the cardboard. These bales are then placed in their massive boilers and burned. This boils all the water for the entire shop.
The children were then divided into groups and had the opportunity to decorate pastries and cakes. They also decorated a special cake for the school.
The best part was, we got to take everything home with us.
